What the Qira’at are
The Quran has been transmitted in a number of authentic modes of recitation, differing in details of pronunciation, elongation and occasionally wording, all tracing back through unbroken chains to the Prophet ﷺ. Most Muslims recite in one of them, Hafs an Asim, often without knowing that others exist.
Studying the ten Qira’at is a demanding, rewarding field. It deepens understanding of the text, sharpens Tajweed enormously, and connects the student to the scholarly tradition of transmission.
Prerequisites
This is an advanced course and we are honest about that. Students should already recite fluently with sound Tajweed, and ideally have memorised a meaningful portion of the Quran. If you are not there yet, our Tajweed and Hifz courses are the route in, and the trial tutor will tell you plainly which is the right starting point.
How it is taught
We begin by securing Hafs an Asim as the baseline, then introduce further Qira’at one at a time, with their rules, their distinctive features and extensive practice. Progress is slow by design; this is a subject that rewards patience.
Tutors for this course hold Ijazah in the Qira’at they teach.
